Inga Ivanova: TANOE – ECHOES OF ROOTS
Ivory Coast 2018/2024

The exhibition follows the journey of 23-year-old Ehua Kassi, which began in 2018 after the death of his father Tanoe Kassi in Abidjan (Ivory Coast). In a fascinating interweaving of grief and solemnity, viewers are witness to a vibrant collective ceremony that honours life.

In her work, artist Inga Ivanova explores themes such as cultural heritage, collectivized memories, and non-verbal communication channels that nurture a sense of commonality. A bold colour palette reveals the dystopian beauty of Ivory Coast – a captivating mix of resistance and attraction.

The photographs, texts, and field recordings from the years 2018 to 2024 explore the idea of ambivalent identities and the nature of Tanoe Kassi’s personal journey to reconcile his French and Ivorian roots. The works invite viewers to reflect on cultural uprooting, geopolitical boundaries, and the universal nature of our ancestral connections – embedded in the tensions of cross-national identities and belonging.
